Unlocking Infinite Possibilities in Architecture - Membrane Structures
We redefine the possibilities of architectural expansion, using membrane structures to transform any space, experience, or environment.
What are the possibilities of membranes?
The possibilities of architectural membrane structures go far beyond what we can envision, and Shelter Structures can turn the most valuable and practical possibilities into fully realized architectural membrane structure solutions.
Lightweight yet Strong
Membranes are lightweight but incredibly strong, capable of withstanding large structural loads. This allows the creation of large, column-free spaces while minimizing the use of steel or concrete.
Translucent and Efficient
Membrane structure materials can allow natural light to pass through, reducing the need for daytime artificial lighting. They can also diffuse sunlight to create a comfortable, evenly lit interior.
Reusable and Movable
Membranes are lightweight and flexible. It makes them highly mobile. They can be transported and reassembled multiple times to fit different sites and events with ease.
Flexible and Formable
Membranes are highly flexible and can be stretched or curved to achieve complex, free-form shapes. This allows us to realize geometric forms that are difficult or impossible with traditional rigid materials.
Large-Span Capability
Membranes can span large areas. Their continuous, tensioned surface reduces thermal bridging and promotes even airflow. This helps maintain a stable, comfortable interior climate across the entire space.
Visually Appealing
Membrane materials create smooth, eye-catching shapes and dynamic light-and-shadow effects. They can incorporate colors, textures, and lighting to give a building a unique and memorable style.
LIGHT
- Can be used for semi-permanent buildings that are easy to move or take down
- Simple to install, reducing construction work
- Quick to build and ready to use faster
ECO-FRIENDLY
- Using the latest membrane technology materials, like ETFE and PTFE
- Protects the ground and the surrounding environment
- Can be reused for multiple projects
BRIGHT
- Lets natural light in, so no extra lighting is needed during the day, saving energy
- Delivers a well-lit, warm, and inviting environment
- Blocks harmful substances and keeps the air clean and safe
SAFE
- Keeps indoor air quality good even in harsh weather
- Provides a secure and reliable space
- Strong structure resists earthquakes, wind, sand, and snow

Key Info You Might Be Looking for About Membrane Structures
Membrane structures are typically grouped into three types: air-supported membrane structures, tensile membrane structures, and frame membrane structures. Air-supported membrane structures use internal pressure, tensioned membrane structures rely on tensioned cables for a lightweight shape, and frame membrane structures use a metal structure for stability. Each type has unique advantages, and the right choice depends on your project requirements.
We mainly use PTFE and ETFE membranes, known for their strength, long lifespan, and excellent light performance. Both ETFE membrane structures and PTFE membrane structures are suitable for large-span and long-term building projects.
Building membrane structures is faster than building traditional buildings. After design approval, most projects can be completed in weeks rather than months.
Maintenance is minimal. Regular cleaning and occasional inspections are usually enough to keep PTFE and ETFE membranes performing well for decades.
