The dimensions of a volleyball court are a standard rectangle which measures 18 metres in length and 9 metres in width. This size is suitable for international competitions such as the World Cup, Olympics and other major events.

Whether you are planning to organise a volleyball match in a spacious gymnasium or on an open beach, knowing the correct size of the court is key to a successful event. Volleyball courts are not only limited to indoor but can also be outdoor and their dimensions will vary depending on the environment. Not only that, but the size of a volleyball court is also affected by the age and gender of the participants, as athletes of different ages and genders have different needs for the court. This article will explain in detail the dimensions of an indoor volleyball court and an outdoor volleyball court.

Indoor Volleyball Court Dimensions

According to the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB), the dimensions of an indoor volleyball court are specified in the following points:

Size of the court: The length of an indoor volleyball court should be 18 metres and the width is 9 metres.

Boundary lines: The boundary lines of the court should be marked by a 5cm wide white line, which effectively distinguishes the boundary from the infield. There should be a 2 cm wide centre line in the middle of the court to separate the two diagonal halves.

Headroom: Indoor volleyball courts should have a minimum of 7 metres of headroom to ensure that athletes are not restricted by a lack of space during play.

Floor Material: The floor material of the court is usually wood or synthetic flooring to ensure the smooth running of the game and the safety of the athletes.

Indoor Volleyball Court

The Main Areas of an Indoor Volleyball Court

  • Competition area

The competition area is a rectangle of 18 metres by 9 metres, surrounded by an accessible area at least 3 metres wide. There is an unobstructed space over the playing area that is at least 7 metres high measured from the ground, with no obstacles in between. FIVB World competition venues have an accessible area of at least 5 metres wide outside the sidelines and at least 8 metres wide outside the end lines, and an accessible space over the playing field area of at least 12.5 metres in height.

  • Serving area

Inside the playing area contains the serving area, which is 9 metres wide and is positioned behind the end lines (not including the end lines). A short line 15 cm long, perpendicular and 20 cm from the end line is drawn behind each of the two end lines. The area between the two short lines is the teeing area and the width of the short line is included in the teeing area. The depth of the teeing area extends to the end of the unobstructed area.

  • Nets and Posts

In indoor volleyball, men and women use different heights of nets. Generally, the height of the net is 2.43 metres for men's matches and 2.24 metres for women's matches. In addition, the height of the nets used by different age groups may also vary. For example, the net height for a junior game may be lower than that for an adult game.

  • Visitor Seats
    • Spectator's viewing experience:

In order to provide a better viewing experience for spectators, there is a real need for adequate seating and good sight lines. This usually involves the design and layout of the volleyball court dimensions to ensure that all spectators have the best possible viewing position.

    • Technical Officials Area:

This is the location provided by the referees and technical officials to observe the game and it may indeed have some impact on the layout of the volleyball court dimensions. Because this area needs to be set up in a position that allows the referees to fully observe the match, it may take up some of the space that could otherwise be used as spectator seating.

Outdoor Volleyball Court Dimensions

Outdoor volleyball courts are divided into beach volleyball grass volleyball. The standard size of a beach volleyball court is 18 metres long and 9 metres wide. This size is suitable for two or four player matches. For grass volleyball, the dimensions may vary from region to region, but they are usually close to the dimensions of a beach volleyball court.

Outdoor Volleyball Court

The Main Areas of an Outdoor Volleyball Court

  • Players' Playing AreaA standard outdoor volleyball playing area is a rectangle 18 metres long and 9 metres wide. The centre of the court is bisected by a centre line 1 metre wide, forming two equal halves. Each team occupies one half of the court for the game.
    • Attacking Line (3 metre line) :At the front of each half, 3 metres from the centre line, there is a line called the attacking line. Players may make any type of hit in the backcourt, but when crossing this line in the frontcourt, they may only make a hang or pass, not an offensive snap.
  • Nets and Posts
    • Net Height:The net height is 2.43 metres for adult men's matches and 2.24 metres for adult women's matches. These standards ensure fair play, as there is often a difference in the average height and strength of male and female athletes.
    • Net Construction:The net is made of fine ropes that span the entire field and are fixed to two posts (posts) of equal height. The posts should be located outside the field so as not to interfere with play.
    • Junior and children's matches:For junior and children's matches, the height of the net is adjusted according to age and gender to suit their physical condition and skill level. For example, the net may be 2.25 metres for junior boys, 2.15 metres for junior girls and lower for younger children.

Spectator Seats: Ensuring Comfort with Shelter Solutions

At outdoor volleyball matches, the comfort of the spectator seating is of paramount importance, especially given the potential for sun exposure and unexpected rain. To provide a spectator environment that is both sheltered from the sun and protected from the rain, it is ideal to use a high-quality Shelter tent, a range of well-designed tents designed to ensure that spectators are protected from inclement weather whilst enjoying the game.

For smaller volleyball game spectator needs, we recommend the pole tent, a simple, easy to set up tent with poles and a tensioned tarp to keep out the sun and light rainfall. On the beach, we ensure that the tent is securely anchored to the ground by using sandbags or other heavy-duty fixtures to keep it stable even in windy conditions.

For large volleyball tournaments or long-term use of spectator seating, Shelter's sports tents are the perfect solution. With reinforced frames and durable, waterproof materials, these canopies provide a larger coverage area to ensure the comfort of large numbers of spectators. When installed on the beach, we use specialized anchoring systems such as steel stakes or ground anchors to ensure that the tents stand firmly in all weather conditions.

Whether it's a pole tent or a sports canopy, Shelter is committed to providing safe, functional and aesthetically pleasing sun and rain protection solutions that allow spectators to enjoy volleyball matches while experiencing an unrivaled viewing environment.

How to Measure a Volleyball Court

The standard dimensions of a volleyball court are 18 metres long and 9 metres wide, forming a rectangular playing area. This area is known as the playing field area and needs to be surrounded by an accessible area at least 3 metres wide.

Steps for Measuring a Volleyball Court

  • Determining the size of the court: First, you need to make sure that the actual length and width of your volleyball court matches the standard dimensions. This can be done by using a tape measure or a rangefinder.
  • Mark the Boundaries: Place markers, such as cone markers or ropes, on the determined boundaries of the court to ensure that it will not move during the measurement process.
  • Measuring the Accessible Zone: Measure an accessible zone at least 3 metres wide around the playing field area. This area should be free of any obstacles so that athletes can move freely during the competition.
  • Check the height: Ensure that there is at least 7 metres of unobstructed space over the playing field area, this is essential to ensure a fair and safe game.
  • Make a site plan: If you need to, make a sketch of the field with all the important measurements such as boundaries, accessibility zones, net position, etc.
  • Verify compliance: Finally, make sure your volleyball court meets all FIVB requirements, including but not limited to the size of the field, the width of the accessible area, and the vertical space over the field.

Conclusion

Whether indoor volleyball or beach volleyball, knowing the correct size is essential for organizing a match. Volleyball court dimensions may vary based on the environment and the age and gender of participants. Indoor courts typically adhere to the 18x9 meter standard to ensure sufficient space for players' skills and strategies. Outdoor courts, such as those for beach volleyball, might adapt dimensions to suit different conditions and spectator views. Safety and smooth gameplay are paramount in both settings.
