Sustainability has been gaining significant traction the past decade, with a significant push for more eco-friendly solutions to everything from clothing and food, to transportation and housing.

Enter alternative housing, specifically geodesic dome houses. These innovative designs boast a unique, modular structure, and plenty of advantages.

Providing not just an aesthetically pleasing and functional living space, geodesic dome houses also promote eco-friendliness. A combination of innovation and practicality, these alternative homes offer a unique approach to sustainable living, appealing to a wide range of audiences.

Geodesic Dome House: Combination of Functionality and Natural Design

Dome houses aren’t new; they’re everywhere in architectural history. But domes as living spaces gained popularity around the 1950s, and had a steady reputation until the 70s. But they never really gained much momentum as housing options until recently.

A sphere is a natural shape that has more volume for less surface area. And dome homes are much the same. Geodesic domes are created using interconnected triangular panels, using a design patented by the American architect, Buckminster Fuller in t he 1950s.

Its design is eye-catching, especially amongst the square, cookie-cutter buildings. They have an airy, aesthetically pleasing look. But more than style, geodesic domes are functional and practical.

What are the Advantages of a Geodesic Dome House?

There are a number of reasons why geodesic dome houses are a good idea. Aside from looking cool, they are also energy efficient and space-efficient. Like actual spheres, they have less surface area, but have plenty of interior space to work with.

Geodesic dome houses are also a cost-effective option. It takes less material to make them, thus, costing less to construct. They are also very durable. Geodesic dome houses are very sturdy, and are able to withstand powerful forces of nature such as hurricanes and earthquakes.

Its aesthetic appeal is compounded by the fact that they are customizable and sustainable; there are countless design possibilities with geodesic dome houses.

1. Stability and Strong Mechanical Properties

One of the strongest geometric shapes is the triangle, and that is the basis on which a geodesic dome is created.

Structurally, triangles are able to withstand pressure from all sides as it distributes stress evenly, as opposed to squares and rectangles. This is how it works with extreme weather conditions as geodesic domes make it possible for wind to flow around the dome. A great example of this is Buckminster’s own home, fondly called the “Bucky Dome,” which still stands today.

2. Requires Less Building Materials

Another significant advantage of geodesic domes is the efficient use of building materials. Because there is less surface area to cover, their construction uses less material. For one, there is little need for the usual foundations, and frames for walls that are typical of rectangular homes.

Using less materials doesn’t mean you’re compromising on stability and quality. Shelter Structures uses steel and aluminum alloy in our geodesic dome kits. Aluminum alloy is a lightweight material, which makes them easy to handle and reduces the structure’s overall weight. Meanwhile, steel alloy is sturdy and guarantees stability of your dome structure. They are able to keep the structure intact, even in extreme weather conditions.

3. Quick Building Duration

These structures are incredibly easy and quick to build. Aside from being made with lightweight materials, most geodesic domes come in kits with instructions. They can be assembled in a matter of days (or hours, if it’s a smaller dome), and won’t need plenty of hands. This saves labor costs, as well as ever-precious time.

In this video, you’ll be able to see just how quickly a Shelter Structures geodesic dome house can be built. It takes only a handful of people to assemble, and barely any heavy machinery. Once the main frame is assembled, putting up the insulation, PVC fabric, and all other accessories is even easier.

4. Highly Portable and Lightweight

Another incredible advantage of geodesic dome houses is that they are highly portable, easy to transport, and easy to assemble and dismantle.

The aluminum alloy frame material makes the structure lightweight. Aluminum alloy makes the frames easy to install, and reduces the amount of people needed for construction.

Dome houses also use PVC and polycarbonate panels, both of which are also lightweight materials. This combination gives the geodesic dome structures high portability. This allows the domes to be easily relocated, making them a great temporary shelter. They’re suitable for glamping, or even for disaster relief.

5. Reduces Cost Over Time

Compared to traditional homes, geodesic dome houses reap long-term savings. Initial costs may vary, depending on your vision for the traditional home or the geodesic dome house. However, after the upfront costs of building a geodesic dome house, the maintenance cost is significantly lower.

With domes, both air circulation and thermal i nsulation can be controlled. Its shape, along with ventilation facilities, help retain even temperatures and distributes light more evenly. This means that it’s easier to get more natural light and ventilation throughout the structure.

It lends itself well to solar energy, as well, as solar panels can be placed at any angle. This energy efficiency may result in lower energy bills in the long run.

6. Aesthetic Appeal

A dome is simply eye-catching. Especially in a world where rectangular, cookie-cutter homes are the norm. Their distinct shape and look set them apart from their conventional counterparts.

But more than its outside appeal, the unique shape and surprisingly spacious interior create an interesting concept. The spaciousness is a great canvas for creativity in interior design and in reworking a space.

The possibilities for the interior layout are almost endless. And the skylights and large windows create a beautiful environment, incorporating natural light into the space seamlessly. This creates an atmosphere that is warm, cozy, and inviting.

7. Eco-friendly Housing Alternative

One of our missions is to minimize environmental impact, reduce carbon footprint and achieve their environmental goals. And Shelter Structures do that very well with their geodesic dome house kits. We use aluminum alloy, PVC, and polycarbonate panels-lightweight and portable materials that make construction easy, efficient, and sustainable.

As previously mentioned, geodesic dome houses are very energy-efficient, with very effective heating and cooling systems. This leads to lower carbon footprints (and lower energy bills), making them a responsible choice for environmentally conscious homeowners.

8. Convertible and Flexible

Because of the sturdy but lightweight material that they’re made with, geodesic dome houses are inherently designed to be flexible. They are also highly customizable, able to be adjusted according to your personal or professional needs.

Geodesic dome houses could be glamping tents, family homes, vacation retreats, community spaces, temporary housing, or anything that you may require at any time. The spacious and open floor plan makes it easy to convert and reconfigure for whatever use. It’s modular design makes it easy to build and dismantle, which makes it convenient to relocate as often as you wish.

9. Customized to Suit Your Needs

The way geodesic dome houses are designed enables owners to adapt and adjust their living spaces to their needs as they change over time. Personal taste is, of course, unique to every owner. And these tastes and preferences change over time. And it can be a hassle to remodel an entire home just because your taste changes.

But that won’t be a problem for geodesic dome houses. One great thing about these structures is that customization options are extensive, both for exterior finishes and interior layouts. Owners can be assured that their home is truly one-of-a-kind, customized specifically for them, their needs, their preferences, and their lifestyles.

How to Build a Geodesic Dome House

Shelter Structures’ geodesic dome house kits come with aluminum alloy tubes for the frame, the PVC cover membrane, insulation layer, curtain kit, and accessories. The accessories may include door kits, magnetic screen doors, solar extractor fan, stove jack, different shaped windows, triangle vent and cap vent.

You won’t need a lot of people to put it up. Depending on the size of your dome, it could just be a handful of people. Here’s a little guide to help you:

  1. First, determine where you want your dome to be placed, and its orientation. Mark that area with a circle.
  2. Assemble the door frame, making sure it is where you want it to be located, and its orientation.
  3. Assemble the frame. The tubes are pre-drilled, and all you need to do is make sure to double-check each tube’s number so you won’t have to do it all over. Make sure to do the frame installation layer by layer, from the bottom and making your way up.
  4. Install the insulation piece by piece using the lashing ropes and the hook-and-loop fasteners.
  5. Install the outer cover, making sure it’s stretched tight and secure.
  6. Install the solar extractor fan, the glass windows, the stove jack, and the curtains.
